Salsa is just a title that came about in the early 70's. The rythm was highly influenced by Cubans and Puertoricans, but for the most part it was birth in Cuba. Puerto Rico being a free country was able to capitalize and take most of the credit as far as it's popularity.

1,2,3. 5,6,7. hmmm these 1,2,3 1,2,3 3/4 steps probly evolved from 19th century or earlier social dances like the waltz. cuban dances are mostly yoruban mixed with some flamenco (which has a strong north african 3 shuffle) and other spanish folk dances.

What was it? I'm curious because I thought that it was rather neat, and I love the song choice. I know nothing about dancing, and I want to surprise my fiance by taking her to dancing lessons with me. I am a musician, and I know that a song like this is what I have in the back of my mind -- perhaps a slightly reduced tempo, but with the same rhythm. The bass plays on the "and of 2" and 4...not sure what that style is, but it's what I want to dance to!

wow! this is really cool this looks like the latin lindy hop ha ha. A lot of this looks like west coast swing and lindy hop with latin flavour. Its amazing the way salsa developed in different parts of the US! I think I prefer new york and ballroom style salsa to LA salsa though
