You remind me, I was just reading about Freidrich Miescher (can never remember how to spell it) discovering DNA, and it's amazing how sophisticated their understanding of chemistry was already, I mean, he was using chem. lab procedures to analyze just what the cellular stuff was made of, and he found, for example, the element phosphorus... I mean, what do you do with your slime to be able to say, "yup, there's phosphorus there, and carbon, and nitrogen, and hydrogen..."?

I can't, and I couldn't find anything like what you're looking for... there just isn't an interest out there in such at thing, not in our era of putting walls up around information. So, try this; think of the very first question you have about biology (don't be tempted to instead try to find what is at the beginning of text books). For me, it was DNA - I wanted to know, what is DNA, anyway? I went on an investigation and have picked up many things along the way. Ask your own questions.

redmeatheart, you're right. An apple may be 'full of enzymes' but in reality it may have about 1g of them. Meaning, if you have reasonable muscle mass, you might need to eat 100 apples per day to maintain that muscle. There's a reason we instinctively want to hunt. This guy looks a bit anorexic, IMHO. I'd say according to his behavior and energic way of speech, he probably has quite low appetite.. May sound strange but it's really related to each other. That's why the low-calorie raw food diet is perfect for him.. I just need my 4 eggs in the morning, at least one meaty meal a day and a plenty of shakes. If I had to run raw I'd proly get mad lol -) And dunno about athletics, but I bet I'd definitely outperform him in benchpress and squat and I'm only 18..

In some point I dont agree with you. I have few fruits and lots of fresh vegies in my diet; but they are not enough to repair damaged muscles and give strength. The only way to get get creatin is eating meat. Also you should check some professional natural bodybuilders. they dont use hormones. They get lots of protein. you only need 10-15 grams of extra protein a day to build muscle. a pound of muscle is around 115 grams of protein. and you can build one pound a week if everything is perfect. carbohydrates FUEL the process and the protein are the building blocks. Sir, with all do respect, I would assume you are a good runner, and you might be content with your mass, but to me you are not muscular but you are fit. I agree for a distant runner you might not need as much protien, but for anyone that is actully focusing on power, lifting, sprinting, MMA. They need more protien than you. With that said, I strongly agree, that protien is extremely over rated and people consume way to much.

Individual amino acids are not affected by cooking. High heat denatures proteins by breaking and changing the bonds between amino acids. This is called denaturing the protein - or changing its folding pattern. This is why egg whites turn white when cooked and why enzymes become ineffective at high heat - they lose their shape and thus their function.

I can tell you that I have made a lot of gains by drinking a whey protien shake immediately after each workout. Maybe powdered protein is not as good as whole foods, but powder is easy to prepare and digest and that's why most body builders use it regularly. I have been weight lifting for 25 years and have experimented with just about everything (except steroids). Heavy weights, good nutrition, and protein shakes are the way to pack on muscle.

protein powders and supplements are not magical muscle-building potions. 30g protein from protein powder is the same in chicken (if not better because of added vitamins) than in protein powder. 99% of bodybuilding supplements are junk; there's only 3 ingredients to build muscle: consistent training, proper nutrition and rest. no way out of it, it's hard, hard work.

When I stopped worrying about protein, which I was TOLD, but didn't listen, from a Mr. America competitor 10 years ago, my bodyfat dropped. I lost NO muscle and lost NO strength even though I've now cut my daily protein intake by 30%. Over-protein consumption is becoming a very outdated practice. Heavy Steroid users take in large amounts of protein because they reduce their carb grams to 200-250 because steroids work better with slightly reduced carbs. It's ok, BUT I would suggest that you eat 4 medium boiled WHOLE eggs (that's 24-26 grams of protein) an hour before your workout... The only time you take the powder is 30 mins after your workout because the digestive tract needs alot of blood to do its job and after training the blood is in the muscles you have just hammered so it works slowly...thats the only time you need whey protein.....I know people who have 4-6 shakes a day!!!(insane)

@bubijenkins Well you usually start producing high amounts of testosterone around 16, this being crucial for growth of muscles etc. Most gyms (In England) will not accept you if you are under 16. I personally think if you have a spotter who knows what they're doing, then weights at 14 is not a problem, but if your just some kid who knows jack shit about the gym, then it's dangerous. Speaking from experience, I'm 5'8 as I stunted my growth with heavy squatting at too young age.

@Ingamells17 Yes I agree about the lifting bit. Shakes are only really necessary if you're lifting heavy. I still don't agree with the age though. Lifting weights is healthy. If you do it safely, and with correct form it doesn't matter if you're 14, 16, 25, or 45. As long as you do it correctly it doesn't "fuck up" any body part. Where are you getting this "recommended age" analogy from? Since when has there been a specific age?

@bubijenkins I am on about the fact that you should be HEAVY lifting with any shakes, you don't go running and use shakes, you need to be going hard in the gym to benefit from shakes. An at 14 if you do squats with a heavy weight for instance it'll fuck up your growth/spine/legs etc. (WITHOUT A SPOTTER!) 16 is the age they recommend you to hit the gym hard or easy, I recommend that's when you should take shakes. So ease up I have sense behind my comment.

If you use organic bananas and freeze them as well they will taste sweeter than regular bought bananas. I just peel the whole bunch of bananas I buy, and peel them all at once and freeze them in a big zip lock bag they freeze just fine, and then no need to peel them after.

Here is the best all natural protein shake recipie I use, and its insanely delicious try it out! ( I am lactose intolerant person so I use egg whites powder) 3/4 cup of water 3/4 cup of dry oats (mix in blender) add 1 frozen ripe banna (the riper the better) and then add 1 scoop of Egg white protein powder (I buy the bulk rose acre farms) mix until all is blended oh my god it took me so many years to find a good protein shake like this one ( all past ones takes like crap!!) try it!

In addition to what Kyle says, the amino acids are supplied to the cell from the proein we eat, via the blood stream. They diffuse into the cells from the blood serum and are just hanging around, awaiting a tRNA molecule to hook up with. The only purpose for tRNA (as far as we know) is to transport an amino acid to a ribosome for inclusion in a new protein. mRNA supplies a pattern which is freed at the end of the process to be reused repeatedly.

The problem w/the 'it's just chemistry' is we can't reproduce it and the need for so many things to be simultaneously occurring it defies probability. Nor can it be replicated (a primary necessity for scientific 'fact') Furthermore, one must question what were the 'selective pressures' for replication on a chemical. (I've yet to meet the biochemist that can answer it, for if it were just a chemical rx it would be replicating without all the baggage of cells, dna, etc.)

if people knew what they are for then they wouldnt have to watch this video. but i think the small unit is needed because the mrna chain has to go SOMEWHERE to start making a polypeptide, cant just try making them willynilly in the cytop[lasm on their oun can they? the large part is probably needed.... to make a comeplete ribosome? a machine cant work with a part missing, right? i hope this helps. although i probably shoudnt even answered since im not sure, but i put alot of thought in this!

@6TM9 GTP is kinda like ATP in that it is used for ENERGY! GTP is more specific than ATP because it is only used during translation (and some other things but whatever). GTP is needed to bring tRNA into the ribosome and also for the mRNA to be pulled inward after each Amino acid has been added. In other words, 2 GTP are used each time an amino acid is added.

I suggest a much more simple solution to not getting scammed - don't buy protein powder PERIOD! The most heavily muscled animals on earth are vegetarians - cows, gorillas, elephants etc. No need to consume protein to synthesise it inside the body. Wealthy people are making money hand over fist out of one of the biggest scams of the modern age. Spend your hard earned cash on something better rather than pissing it away on expensive miracle milkshake.....

The math is not that hard! The serving area tells you the grams per scoop. If a scoop is 35 grams and the protein grams in that scoop is 30 grams of protein, then you have close to a 90% blend. Actually this was very informative. Keeps you from getting ripped off on lower quality proteins. Yes 100 grams of protein is 100 grams of protein, but I think you need to look at the %. If it's below 80%, you're body is not going to absorb it as well. Great video post!

A simple way to look at what he said about the mix is to look at a 100 gram serving of the protein. If it was all Isolate then you'd have 90 grams of actual protein per 100 gram serving and if it was all Concentrate then you'd have 80 grams of actual protein per 100 gram serving. If it's coming out as 85 grams of actual protein per 100 grams then you have a 50:50 mix/blend of Isolate:Concentrate. What you should also consider is how quickly the protein is metabolised.
